Client: John Holt

Order: History Books and Memories Books

Dear Simon

Now that you have completed the additional 35 books on the History of Skelton-on-Ure I would like to thank you and your staff for the dedicated way in which the work was done.. As you know the original order was for 100 history books and 100 books on my childhood memories of the village in the 1930 and 40s.  I had anticipated that there would be limited sales, particularly for the history book as the village is so small, but the demand was such that I gave you an order for an extra 25 books which was then extended to 35.

I discovered your company from the internet and when I first came to you it was with some apprehension since as you know I was doubtful whether the photographs and other images would be reproduced correctly; and there are 368 of them. My doubts centred on whether they would come out too light or too dark and whether when one was changed to make it lighter whether this would change all the others which then might make those which were correct much too light.  I need not have worried as there were only about a dozen or so which need touching up and your company is an absolute wizard at changing them in next to no time at all.  you make light of your work, and not only that, when it came to making changes because names had been spelled incorrectly this was all done without any fuss and submitted the pages to me via email so that I could see the changes before the printing took place. I owe a special thank you to you all for the dedicated way in which you have helped to make the books a success.

I also have to say that I am very pleased with the paper you used which I think you said was a 90gsm Lumi Art woodfree paper.  This gave a very nice sheen to the paper surface and with the black print is very easy to read.  I know that you have reservations about using it and of course there were problems with the paper sticking together perhaps because of static electricity which caused some blank pages to be bound into some books. Another problem was that sometimes the paper "flipped" over which meant that the wrong edge was bound into the book. Where this happened with a few books there was no question of them not being reprinted and they were replaced immediately.

You may recall that there was also a problem with the Memories books which needed replacing and because a goodly number of them had been presold when we had already travelled up to Yorkshire without them you arranged for them to be sent by special delivery to arrive before the book launch on 20th March.. This was very much appreciated and enabled the launch to prove a huge success.

I have been fortunate in finding a printer close to where I live and would have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone who wished to have a good job done. Indeed upon my recommendation to a colleague you have already printed a large number of leaflets in connection with the recent general election. May I wish you continued success

Yours sincerely

John H Holt
